Spanish media association sues Meta for 550 million euros
The Spanish media association has sued the US technology group Meta for 550 million euros for hindering competition in the advertising market.
The "massive" and "systematic" analysis of user data from its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms gives the company an unfair advantage in the design of personalized online advertising, the Asociacion Medios de Informacion (AMI) announced.
In addition, Meta collects data without the express consent of users and thus violates data protection regulations. The complaint was filed on Friday. Meta was initially unavailable for comment.

- The AMI's lawsuit against Meta in the Spanish courts argues that the company's collection of user data without explicit consent, particularly from its Spanish-speaking platforms, is a violation of European data protection regulations.
- Given Meta's dominance in the digital advertising market, the AMI asserts that its use of user data for targeted advertising provides an unfair competitive edge, shrinking the opportunities for other media associations.
- Should Meta fail to address these concerns and rectify its actions, the total fine could potentially reach beyond the initial 550 million euros, given the significant impact on Spanish media associations and the broader European market.
