Middle East Conflict Rages On - Spain intends to file a lawsuit against Israel for alleged genocide.

Spain will become the first European Union (EU) nation to side with South Africa in a genocide lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares revealed this news in Madrid. Albares spoke of a "massive armed conflict where there is no distinction between civilian and military targets." He also expressed concern that the risk of escalation would only increase.

He stated that this decision was made after learning that the measures sanctioned by the International Court in recent days have gone totally unheeded. Albares spoke at a news conference, revealing that Spain has been one of the most vocal critics of Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip for a long time. It's been this way since other countries, like Turkey, Egypt, and Chile, publicly displayed their support for South Africa's legal action. Spain has been outspoken about Israel's military activities in Gaza amongst European nations. Last October, the government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez halted all arms sales to Israel. At the end of May, Madrid, along with Norway and Ireland, declared official recognition of Palestine as a state.

South Africa initiated the lawsuit against Israel at the end of 2023, accusing the country of violating the Genocide Convention. The UN Court demanded that Israel take measures to prevent genocide and allow an increase in humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. And at the end of May, the ICJ ordered an immediate halt to a highly controversial military operation in Rafah, located in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Israel, however, rejects the claims of genocide and asserts its right to self-defense following Hamas and other extremist groups' attack on October 7th, which led to the death of approximately 1200 people. According to Palestinian estimates, more than 36,000 individuals have perished in Gaza since the start of the conflict in October.
