Fighting along the Eastern Borderline

South Korean territory has witnessed an influx of North Korean refugees traversing the border on foot.

A North Korean individual is said to have escaped to the South by traversing the heavily fortified border between the two nations on foot, as per South Korean military sources. The South Korean military captured a "suspected North Korean" at the eastern frontline and handed them over to the appropriate authorities on Tuesday, the military stated. According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the detained individual is a North Korean soldier who was aided in his escape by the South Korean military.

The individual, still in his military attire, was captured while sprinting along a seaside road in the eastern province of Gangwon, local press reported. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff mentioned there were no distinctive military activities observed in North Korea. Further details concerning the incident and the background of the escape are currently being probed.

This event marks the second instance within a few weeks. On August 8, a North Korean managed to cross to the South by sea, marking the first successful sea escape in 15 months. Since the division of Korea, tens of thousands of North Koreans have sought refuge in the South, predominantly setting off for China initially.**

The individual was initially spotted by local authorities while wearing his North Korean military uniform. The South Korean government is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his escape to the South.
