Heavy continuous rain has caused flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, in some cases on an extreme scale.

Severe weather approaches, threatening destruction. - Some regions in the south experience an increase in flood severity.

The flood situation is growing severe in certain areas of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The town of Ebersbach an der Fils, located south of Stuttgart, is facing a significant flood threat as per an estimate provided by the district office. The floodwaters impacted a residential area, prompting authorities to declare an extraordinary emergency situation as reported by the district office in Göppingen in the early hours.

The situation in Bavaria became more perilous in the evening, with various locations being evacuated. In the Swabian regions of Günzburg and Donau-Ries, extreme caution was advised as more torrential downpours were anticipated during the early part of the week.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is slated to visit the flood-hit regions today. He will be accompanied by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD). The mess caused by incessant rain resulted in rivers and streams reaching their maximum capacity in many places, causing flooding in multiple towns, including the Bavarian market. At least one casualty has been reported so far.

Heavy downpours also led to flooding in Rems-Murr-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg. The situation in Rudersberg, specifically, is dire according to a police spokesperson. "Rudersberg is underwater, everything is flooded," he said. People were confined inside their homes and were being removed from the danger zone by the fire department. The situation remained unclear.

The floodwaters at the tributaries in Bavaria are beginning to ebb, as per the Bavarian Flood Information Service. Peak levels have mostly been attained, the service stated in its nightly update. However, additional rain might postpone the recession process.

Additional storms are on the horizon, with the German Weather Service (DWD) lifting all severe thunderstorm warnings accompanied by heavy rain in Germany during the night. The DWD, however, cautioned about scattered showers with the potential for torrential rain, mostly in southern Germany. Between noon and evening, the southern regions of Germany, particularly those close to the Danube, and the Bavarian Forest were likely to experience such conditions. Some isolated areas remained vulnerable to thunderstorms.

By evening, the storms could expand southwards, encompassing the Upper Rhine and the northern Alpine foothills. The DWD also forecasted possible strong thunderstorms with heavy rain in the Alps. For eastern Germany, the DWD predicted thunderstorms with heavy rain in the afternoon. Between 15 and 25 liters per square meter in a brief time span were expected, while localized thunderstorms could see a maximum of 30 liters per square meter.
