Summer interview - Soder fears intensification of US election campaign after attack

After the attack on US Presidential candidate Donald Trump, CSU chief Markus Söder is concerned about further polarization of the American campaign. "There will be many conspiracy theories, I fear," Söder stated in a summer interview on ZDF-show "Berlin direct." It is also possible that the campaign will now calm down, but the opposite is to be expected.

To prevent a loss for US President Joe Biden, the Democrats should consider nominating another candidate, according to Söder: "Given this situation, the Democrats should really consider, if they still want to win the election halfway, whether there isn't a change." Currently, a president who swears to "say names right" is facing a strong Trump. Söder hopes very much that it will eventually lead to a peaceful campaign and a good result.

Söder wishes Trump a speedy recovery

In general, Söder was shocked by the attack. "I wish Donald Trump a speedy recovery. And violence is of course absolutely no means of dispute," he said.

During a campaign event in the state of Pennsylvania on Saturday (local time), Trump was injured in a shooting incident on the stage. The shooter was killed by security personnel, according to the Secret Service responsible for Trump's protection. At the shooting, a male spectator died, two others were injured and were in critical condition.
