Socialist Pedro Sánchez remains head of government in Spain
The socialist Pedro Sánchez has been confirmed in office as Prime Minister of Spain for a further four years. The lower house in Madrid voted by 179 votes to 171 in favor of continuing the left-wing government on Thursday, almost four months after the parliamentary elections. The 51-year-old politician from the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has governed the EU's fourth-largest economy with minority governments since mid-2018.
In the early parliamentary elections on July 23, the PSOE only came second behind the conservative People's Party (PP) of opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. However, Feijóo's candidacy was rejected by the lower house at the end of September.
The confirmation of Pedro Sánchez as Prime Minister was supported by a majority in the Spanish Parliament. The left-wing government, led by Pedro Sánchez and his Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), will continue to govern Spain with a minority in the House of Deputies.
