Social Activist's Estate Disburses 25 Million to Citizens' Group

In Austria, the Citizens' Council, led by Project Manager Alexandra Wang, dispersed a whopping 25 million Euro from the inheritance of social activist Marlene Engelhorn. The main objective was to lessen societal inequality and offer a leg up to underserved groups, as stated by Angelika Taferner from the Citizens' Council.

The funds are earmarked for initiatives focusing on topics like climate change, affordable housing, health and social justice, integration, and education. As per the Citizens' Council, this decision not only distributed cold, hard cash but also respect, admiration, and numerous future prospects, as described by Angelika Taferner.

For the "Good Council for Redistribution," a diverse group of 50 Austrian citizens aged 16 to 85 were handpicked to discuss during six weekend sessions how the money should be put to the best use.

The 31-year-old Engelhorn almost gave away her entire fortune with this act. She has been a longtime advocate for the reintroduction of wealth and inheritance taxes in Austria. Over the next 30 years, an estimated 600 billion Euro would be inherited tax-free in Austria. In their belief, the rich should shoulder a much larger portion of the responsibility for a more equitable society than they currently do.

The Citizens' Council also had climate protection on their agenda. Thus, the Nature Conservation Society Austria, which received the most generous individual donation of 1.6 million Euro, was one of the recipients. The donations were often doled out in installments over several years to provide organizations with financial security, it was noted.
