Diplomatic relations - Slovenia acknowledges Palestine as a sovereign nation.
Recently, Slovenia, another European country, joined Spain, Ireland, and Norway in recognizing Palestine as a nation. The Slovenian Foreign Ministry, through the chief diplomat Tanja Fajon, stated on news platform X, "Dear Palestinian people, today's final decision is a message of hope and peace. We believe that only a two-state solution can lead to a lasting peace in the Middle East."
Slovenia expressed their continued support for the safety of Palestinians and Israelis. Although several countries have already recognized Palestine as a state, influential Western nations like the United States and Great Britain, as well as most European Union countries, have yet to do so. Slovenia is now the 147th country in the world to acknowledge Palestine as an independent nation. Israel's government sees this growing recognition as "reward for terrorism."
The recognition by Slovenia followed a parliamentary maneuver in Ljubljana. The opposition SDS party, led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa, initially withdrew a motion for a referendum on recognizing Palestine. They then resubmitted a new motion to delay the parliamentary vote on acknowledging Palestine for at least 30 days.
However, the center-left government in Slovenia managed to hold a vote yesterday. The government coalition managed to interpret the procedural rules in a way that allowed the vote to take place immediately, leading to the unanimous adoption of the proposal. The right-wing opposition boycotted the vote.
