"Silence is complicity": Greta Thunberg accuses Israel of genocide again

Since Hamas attacked Israel at the beginning of October, a military operation has been underway in the Gaza Strip. Climate activist Greta Thunberg does not believe this is justified - and has clear words to say.

War in Gaza - "Silence is complicity": Greta Thunberg accuses Israel of genocide again

Climate activist Greta Thunberg and other members of the Swedish branch of the climate protection group Fridays for Future have accused Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip. Thunberg and five other signatories wrote in an opinion piece published in the newspapers"Aftonbladet" (Sweden ) and "Guardian" (UK ) on Tuesday that the Islamist Hamas, which rules Gaza, "murdered Israeli civilians in a horrific attack" cannot legitimize Israel's "ongoing war crimes". "Committing genocide is neither self-defense nor in any way proportionate," they wrote.

On X, formerly Twitter, Thunberg shared her guest commentary saying: "(...) Calling for an end to this inexcusable violence is a matter of basic humanity. Silence is complicity. We cannot remain silent in the face of a looming genocide."

The death rate in Gaza is at a historic high, with thousands of children killed in just a few weeks.
Demanding an end to this inexcusable violence is a question of basic humanity. Silence is complicity. You cannot be silent in an unfolding genocide.https://t.co/Az5O7ZKYU5

Thunberg and her co-authors emphasized that they were only speaking on behalf of Fridays for Future in Sweden. The organization has always spoken out when people suffer or are killed, whether in Kurdistan or Ukraine, and will not remain silent now. They referred to the Israeli historian Ras Segal, who described Israel's actions in Gaza as "textbook genocide" just a few days after the conflict began.

Greta Thunberg and FFF Sweden condemn anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents

At the same time, the group condemned anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents in Sweden. "Everyone involved in this debate has a responsibility to distinguish between Hamas, Muslims and Palestinians, just as the Israeli state should be distinguished from the Jewish people and Israelis," they wrote.

Thunberg had already attracted criticism in October because, according to media reports, she had shared an appeal on Instagram by a pro-Palestinian group based in Germany accusing Israel of genocide. Fridays for Future made the genocide accusation its own in a separate post at the time. The German section distanced itself. At the time, Thunberg only declared her rejection of the Hamas terror attacks on Israel on October 7, in which around 1,200 Israelis were killed and around 240 kidnapped, following fierce criticism.
