Significantly less additional money is to be provided for the Bundeswehr in the budget than requested
For the Bundeswehr, significantly less additional money is to be provided in the budget for the coming year than demanded by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. According to the agreement among the traffic light coalition leaders, the defense budget, currently around 52 billion Euros, is only expected to increase by approximately 1.2 billion Euros, as reported by the German Press Agency on Friday from coalition circles in Berlin.
Pistorius had demanded more and an exception to these expenditures from the debt brake. "We are talking about a supplementary requirement of 6.5 to 7 billion Euros for the coming year. The additional requirement will also continue to grow in the following years because the special fund will be legally bound and exhausted by the end of this year," he had demanded in May on the sidelines of a visit to the USA. And: "We have to be honest: A not insignificant two-digit billion euro increase will be necessary from 2028 onwards."
In 2028, the so-called special fund for the Bundeswehr was allocated a 100-billion-Euro pot, but for the next year, Pistorius wanted significant increases in the regular defense budget because the money is then earmarked and no further maneuvering room exists. He had warned of a looming "weapons stop."
The German Armed Forces, or Bundeswehr, was hoping for more funding from the budget for the upcoming Year, as demanded by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. However, due to the agreement among the traffic light coalition leaders, the defense budget will only see an increase of approximately 1.2 billion Euros, affecting the Household budgets of many in the German Armed Forces.
