Significant rise in electricity generation from renewables in the third quarter
Electricity generation from renewable energies increased significantly year-on-year in the third quarter. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 8.1% more electricity was generated from renewables compared to the same quarter last year, giving them a 60.2% share of total electricity generated. In the third quarter of last year, this figure was only 44.4 percent.
In contrast, generation from conventional sources such as coal and natural gas fell by 42.9%. According to the statisticians, a total of 94.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated and fed into the grid from July to September. This was a significant decrease of 20.3 percent compared to the same period last year. According to the Federal Office, the reasons for this are a drop in electricity consumption in energy-intensive industries due to the weak economy and increased imports of electricity.
As in the first half of the year, wind power was the most important source of energy in domestic electricity generation in the third quarter. This form of electricity generation increased by 16.2% year-on-year to now account for 24.4% of all electricity generated. The amount of electricity generated in coal-fired power plants fell significantly - by 47.3% to a share of 23.9%. Nuclear energy fell to zero following the shutdown of the last nuclear power plants in April.

Despite the decline in energy production from conventional sources, the overall trend in power generation continues to favor renewables. For instance, in the upcoming quarter, we anticipate another increase in renewable energy production, aiming to surpass the 60.2% share achieved in the third quarter. This shift towards renewables is a key strategy in mitigating the decline in overall power generation and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
