Intense climate conditions in Australia - Severe weather conditions in Australia: compulsory evacuations and power outages
Intense weather conditions with torrential rain and violent storms have led to massive flooding and widespread power failures in certain parts of Australia. Authorities ordered the evacuation of six towns near Derwent River on Tasmania's island, following a flood warning issued by the country's meteorological agency for the river. The southern regions have been hit the hardest.
More than 100,000 individuals in Tasmania and Victoria, including Melbourne, endured temporary power cuts, as per ABC News. A farmer from Westwood, Tasmania, Chris Kilby, described the winds as "utterly terrifying". The storm damaged roofs and uprooted trees. A 63-year-old woman lost her life when a tree collapsed on a vacation cottage in Moama, located on the border between New South Wales and Victoria.
Even Sydney wasn't spared: Numerous flights were cancelled at the city's airport due to the storm. Only one runway was operational, according to a representative from "Sky News Australia".
On the other hand, record-breaking heat persists in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Despite the fact that it's winter in "Down Under," the area continues to experience scorching temperatures. A record-breaking 41.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at the Yampi Sound weather station in Kimberley last week. In fact, August has been the warmest month in Australia since temperature records began, as reported by Weatherzone. Australia is highly susceptible to climate change-related impacts.
Residents in the six evacuated towns near Derwent River were advised to seek safety immediately due to the ongoing evacuation. Upon returning to their homes after the evacuation, many people discovered extensive damage caused by the floods.
