Serbia: A ship with migrants on board sank
A transport truck carrying around 50 migrants in its cargo area has overturned in the southwest of Serbia. More than 30 passengers were reportedly injured, according to a report by the state television. The vehicle allegedly overturned on the road between the small town of Pirot, near the border with Bulgaria, and the city of Nis in southern Serbia, for reasons yet to be determined.
Further details were not immediately available, and there was no initial statement from the Serbian police. RTS public broadcasting service footage showed the overturned van by the side of the road, while police directed traffic.
Serbia is located on the so-called Balkan route, through which smugglers often organize irregular border crossings for people heading to Western Europe. Migrants come from Bulgaria or North Macedonia and travel north and west to Hungary or Croatia - often in overcrowded trucks or cars.
The overturned truck carrying migrants was traveling from Pirot, near the Bulgarian border, towards Nis in Serbia. Van, carrying around 50 individuals, suffered multiple injuries during the accident. Authorities in Serbia, including emergency services, are currently assisting multiple injured migrants at the scene in Serbia.
