Selenskyj for talks at NATO headquarters

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the NATO Headquarters during his recent Brussels trip. Zelenskyy had a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in the NATO headquarters' central building in the afternoon on Thursday. The topics of discussion reportedly included the NATO Summit scheduled for the second week of July in Washington, D.C., where Zelenskyy is invited as a guest of the Heads of State and Government of the 32 Allies.

Stoltenberg had previously dampened Ukraine's hopes for a swift invitation to membership in the Western defense alliance with the comment that there is not yet a consensus among NATO members for such a move. However, plans are in place to provide Ukraine with long-term commitments for military aid at the summit and to establish a NATO headquarters in Wiesbaden for coordinating weapons deliveries and training activities for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Before his visit to NATO, Zelenskyy attended the EU Summit in Brussels as a guest. There, he signed an agreement on security cooperation and long-term support with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel.

During his meeting at NATO Headquarters, Zelenskyy discussed the upcoming NATO Summit with Stoltenberg, highlighting his invitation as a guest of the 32 Allies. Despite some hesitance from NATO members about Ukraine's membership, Stoltenberg mentioned plans to provide long-term military aid to Ukraine at the summit. Zelenskyy, prior to his NATO visit, held conversations with EU Commission President Ursala von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel at the EU Summit, securing an agreement on security cooperation and support for Ukraine.
