Species Protection Project - Selected field hares in North Saxony have offspring
In May, European hamsters were released onto a field in Northern Saxony as part of a conservation project - now, the rodents have given birth to their first offspring. A few days ago, the young were spotted on wildlife cameras, Leipzig Zoo announced.
This is the next milestone after the release of the endangered animals, the Zoo Leipzig stated.
The European hamsters were bred at Leipzig Zoo. The Zoo collaborates with the Saxon Ministry of Environment and other partners on the European hamster conservation project.
In the breeding station, European hamsters were born again this year, meaning ideally 2025 animals could be released.
The birth of the European hamster offspring in Northern Saxony marks a significant development in the conservation project. The breeding station at Leipzig Zoo has been instrumental in the reproduction of these animals, contributing to the potential release of up to 2025 hamsters in the future. Delitzsch, located in Northern Saxony, is one of the regions where these efforts are being carried out, with the support of the Saxon Ministry of Environment and other partners.
