Searching for two missing individuals in a flooded region is a task undertaken by rescue teams.
Recently, flood waters in south Germany have primarily damaged buildings and infrastructure. However, there's now a grim turn of events as human lives are at stake. One firefighter lost his life whilst performing a night-time rescue operation in Offingen, in Swabia, and another is missing. Additionally, a woman's fate remains unknown as she hasn't been found. Rescuers are apprehensive about her well-being.
In Swabia's Landkreis Günzburg, a 22-year-old firefighter is currently unaccounted for after a flood rescue operation at night. He supposedly went out with a boat from the DLRG water rescue during the wee hours of Sunday morning to aid stranded communities. Five rescue crew members were in the boat when it was flipped over by strong currents around 2:30 a.m., according to police. Incredibly, four out of the five crew members managed to escape unharmed.
A large-scale search is underway to locate the missing firefighter. Engaged in the search efforts are voluntary fire brigade teams, DLRG water rescue, water police, the Bundeswehr, and the local police. Both air and water support are being deployed, with two helicopters apparently involved as well.
Since Saturday evening, a 43-year-old woman has disappeared - she is feared to be in a flooded basement in the Upper Bavarian town of Schrobenhausen. As per the police's statement, she was confined to the cellar of a multi-family home, which got submerged in water that same night. Rescue crew members in the area between Augsburg and Ingolstadt have yet to gain entry to the flooded basement.
A firefighter passed away during a night-time rescue mission in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Upper Bavaria. The 42-year-old was a member of the voluntary fire department and perished due to a boat capsizing near the towns of Affalterbach and Uttenhofen. Flights were deployed around 11:00 p.m. to save several people trapped by the floods. Her body was recovered from the water around 2:20 a.m.
Due to continuous rainfall, rivers and streams have overflowed in numerous locations, notably Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Countless people have been displaced from their homes. Apparently, many regions have declared a disaster condition, necessitating the evacuation of multiple households and apartments via helicopter.
