Scorching temperatures and water scarcity pose challenges for Cyprus citizens.
Meteorologists predict temperatures of 42 degrees in Cyprus, with water reservoirs only reaching 42% capacity due to a lack of rain during winter. This situation, they say, is a result of climate change.
The upcoming summer on the holiday island of Cyprus is signaling its presence with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. According to the Cyprus Meteorological Service, inner parts of the island and the capital Nicosia can expect thermometers at a whopping 42 degrees Celsius. Coastal areas, on the other hand, will see temperatures of 37 degrees.
As reported by Cypriot media in relation to the Cyprus Water Authority, the water reservoirs are only 42% full, down from 66% just a year ago.
The heat wave is projected to continue until Friday, warned Cypriot meteorologists. These extreme conditions are coming earlier than expected and contribute to the ongoing drought, which is also a byproduct of climate change.
Doctors recommend that older people and those with heart and respiratory issues remain indoors. Outdoor labor should be ceased during midday.
