Culture and science - Science Minister wants affordable student rooms
High Rents, Few Offers in University Cities: Hessian Science Minister Timon Gremmels (SPD) will advocate for more affordable housing for students. Together with Building Minister Kaweh Mansoori (SPD), he intends to bring additional construction projects into motion, Gremmels stated in his first government declaration in the Wiesbaden Landtag.
The student services, counseling, and internationalization of universities should be encouraged, "to attract more young people to complete their education in Hesse," according to the Science and Culture Minister. The "scandalous shortage of affordable housing" makes access to education difficult. The Hessian scientific landscape "must remain free and accessible to people from all social backgrounds," emphasized the Science and Culture Minister.
Regarding the Antisemitism debate that overshadowed the World Art Exhibition documenta 15 in Kassel in 2022, Minister Gremmels, who hails from this city, stated that restoring the tarnished reputation of the show is one of his most important tasks. "Art freedom and the protection of human dignity should not be played against each other," Gremmels said. A structural reform is underway: "We want documenta 15 to become the role model for documenta 16."
The mood in the art scene may be heated, but it is essential to strengthen the art location in Kassel with its "exhibitions of global significance," Gremmels reiterated. The documenta 16 "will go ahead, if necessary, only in 2028 instead of 2027," he added. The show is, alongside the Biennale in Venice, one of the most important exhibitions for contemporary art.
