SPD politician - Schweitzer to be elected new Minister President

The Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament in Mainz elects a new Minister-President. The previous Social and Labor Minister Alexander Schweitzer is expected to succeed Malu Dreyer. The 50-year-old Social Democrat needs 51 out of 101 votes from the deputies. The traffic light coalition has 54 votes, three more than necessary. The election is considered a foregone conclusion.

After Schweitzer's swearing-in, Dorothee Schall (SPD) is expected to be sworn in as a new minister in the State Chancellery. The 46-year-old native of Ludwigshafen from North Rhine-Westphalia takes over Schweitzer's ministry. She is responsible for Social Affairs, Labor, Transformation, and Digitalization. The remaining ministerial council remains unchanged. Schweitzer has already announced that he intends to continue governing with the Greens and FDP after the 2026 state election.

In the anticipated succession, Alexander Schweitzer from the SPD will assume the role of Minister-President in Rhineland-Palatinate, following Malu Dreyer. The traffic light coalition, which includes SPD, Greens, and FDP, holds a majority of 54 votes in the state parliament, ensuring a smooth election process. Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament is set to convene in Mainz for this significant political event. After being sworn in, Alexander Schweitzer plans to form a new government with the Greens and FDP, with the aim of maintaining this coalition until 2026.
