School in Berlin suspends graduation event due to incoming demonstrations.
Group of students from a Berlin High School intends to turn their graduation ceremony into a pro-Palestinian protest. Alarmingly, the school administration has taken action and canceled the event due to concerns about safety.
Reports indicate that authorities were informed about the cancellation, with a police spokesperson confirming the decision. It appears that the Tiergarten High School administration received information suggesting that a significant number of this year's graduating class were planning confrontational political demonstrations during the graduation party on July 5, as reported by the "Tagesspiegel".
According to sources, around half of the 120 students are part of a WhatsApp group planning to use the certificate collection for pro-Palestinian protests. The school administration anticipates potential disruptions during the ceremonial distribution of graduation certificates and, as a result, cannot guarantee the safety of the event.
The students are expected to collect their certificates from the school early July, as mentioned in a letter from the school administration and school counselors to the graduates and their parents, according to the media. The school administration declined to comment on the matter, instead directing queries to the Senate Educational Administration.
It was revealed that the Senate Educational Administration became aware of the situation through media reports and immediately mobilized school oversight. A representative from the Educational Administration stated, "Our objective is to work collectively with the school to find a solution and ensure that the certificate handover occurs within an appropriate setting."
