Scholz urges rebuilding of Ukraine for a more robust, liberated, and affluent nation.
President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is currently in Berlin for a conference aimed at rebuilding his country. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged allies to support increased air defense against Russian attacks in Ukraine. He stressed the importance of preventing reconstruction with a strong emphasis that "the best reconstruction is the one that doesn't happen at all."
Scholz highlighted Ukraine's potential in various fields including agriculture, renewable energies, hydrogen, digitalization, IT, defense, health technology, and pharmaceuticals. He asserted that Ukraine would be rebuilt to be "stronger, freer, and wealthier than before".
The German Chancellor presented an ambitious plan for Christchurch reconstruction, which he will advocate at the G7 summit in Italy starting Thursday. The goal is to turn Ukraine into a future member of the European Union. Additionally, Scholz brought up the World Bank's proposed rebuilding aid of up to $500 billion (464 billion euros) over the next decade, emphasizing the need for private investments.
Despite the ongoing war, there is no sign of German businesses leaving Ukraine. In fact, the automotive sector alone employs 35,000 people. Trade volume has increased compared to before the war. Scholz concluded that the economic potential of Ukraine is evident.
Zelensky himself is also attending the conference and will be speaking at the German parliament later in the day. This is Zelensky's third visit to Berlin since the Russian invasion over two years ago. Around 2,000 participants from 60 countries have gathered at the exhibition center for this conference focused on networking and fostering business initiatives, vocational training, and other relevant activities. It is not a charity event but a platform for discussing and mobilizing reconstruction efforts.
