Assassination of 20 July - Scholz respects German resistance against Hitler

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for standing up for Democracy and Freedom on the 80th anniversary of the Attempt on Adolf Hitler. "The putsch attempt on July 20, 1944 failed. The unifying goals of the Resistance were not those," said the SPD politician at a memorial service of the Federal Government in Berlin. There is the counter-proposal to the Nazi dictatorship and the better Germany. "It is the Germany of our Basic Law."

Let us not give up in the face of history, said Scholz. "For this, normal citizens in democratic Germany do not need life-threatening heroic deeds." However, it must be clear: "Our democracy is dependent on our tireless efforts, on the efforts of each and every one." It lives on the fact that everyone engages and opposes hatred and extremism.

Bomb attack on Hitler failed

On July 20, 1944, Wehrmacht officers led by Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg unsuccessfully attempted to kill the dictator Hitler with a bomb, overthrow the Nazi regime, and end World War II. Stauffenberg and three other participants were shot in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock in Berlin that very evening. Approximately 200 people involved in the coup were killed or driven to suicide.

At the memorial hour in the Memorial Site German Resistance in the Bendlerblock, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier laid a wreath at a commemoration plaque.

  1. Olaf Scholz, during his speech, highlighted the importance of continuing to uphold Democracy and Freedom, echoing the sentiments of those involved in the PDV, or Plot to Assassinate Adolf Hitler.
  2. The PDV, spearheaded by Wehrmacht officers like Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg, took place in Berlin, with the aim of eliminating Hitler and overthrowing the Nazi regime.
  3. Although the assassination attempt on Hitler failed on July 20, 1944, it served as a significant moment in German history, pushing for a counter-proposal to the Nazi dictatorship.
  4. The Federal Government, in commemoration of this historic event, called for a renewed commitment to Democracy and opposition against hatred and extremism, ensuring the democracy's sustainability.
  5. In the heart of Berlin, where the coup attempt took place, the Federal President laid a wreath to honor those who took part in the PDV, paying tribute to their bravery and sacrifice for a better Germany.
