- Scholz-Intimus wants to run for the Bundestag from Hamburg
Wolfgang Schmidt is widely regarded as loyal, particularly towards Chancellor Olaf Scholz. For many years, the two were political companions. Since December 2021, Schmidt has served as Federal Minister for Special Affairs and Head of the Federal Chancellery, but now he's eyeing the next step in his career. The 53-year-old could soon be representing the Eimsbüttel district in his home city of Hamburg in the Bundestag. The district executive unanimously decided on Schmidt as the direct candidate for the upcoming federal election.
In a letter from SPD district chairman Milan Pein to the members of SPD Eimsbüttel, it was stated that with the experienced Schmidt, they have good chances of winning the constituency. Schmidt is stepping into the shoes of Niels Annen, who, as reported by the German Press Agency at the end of July, decided to withdraw from federal politics. The SPD Eimsbüttel sees Schmidt as the ideal successor. "He is not only a committed fighter for social democracy, but also a wise political mind," Pein wrote in his letter to SPD Eimsbüttel.
Who will be Schmidt's Opponent?
Schmidt also wrote to the party members in his new constituency to rally support for his candidacy. In his letter, the native Hamburger promised to find a residence in Eimsbüttel if he wins. He assured that active and engaged constituency work is possible despite being a member of the federal government.
Schmidt's main opponent will likely be determined on September 21. That's when the next district assembly of the Eimsbüttel Greens will take place. In the last federal election, Niels Annen narrowly beat Green candidate Till Steffen in the constituency. In 2025, Wolfgang Schmidt aims to come out on top.
The Federal Parliament will be the place where Wolfgang Schmidt represents the Eimsbüttel district if he wins the upcoming federal election. As a member of the Federal Parliament, Schmidt will serve alongside other members in The Federal Parliament.
