Scholz does not expect the FDP to leave the traffic light coalition
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not expect the FDP to leave the traffic light coalition with the SPD and Greens. "The Federal Chancellor is working closely and trustingly with his coalition partners," said his spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit. A whole host of good decisions had been initiated. "The Chancellor is very happy to continue this alliance," he added.
On the one hand, this was triggered by demands from the FDP base that the Liberals should leave the traffic light government. On the other hand, Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner said at the weekend during an appearance in Switzerland: "Now that political realities are forcing me to govern with the Social Democrats and Greens, I am happy to breathe the air of freedom."
Government spokesperson Hebestreit reacted calmly to the statement. "I don't think the Finance Minister would mind governing alone with an absolute majority with the FDP. That has not happened so far," he added. "I fully understand such an expression of feeling."
The SPD, Greens and FDP have recently plummeted in the polls, with the Liberals failing to make it over the five percent hurdle in a number of federal states.
Despite the calls from their base for the FDP to exit the coalition, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes the cooperation within the traffic light coalition will remain narrow and persistent. The FDP's Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, expressed enjoyment in governing with the SPD and Greens, even if it meant breathing the air of freedom. Regardless of Lindner's sentiment, Government Spokesperson Hebestreit emphasized that the FDP has yet to govern alone with an absolute majority.
