Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) insists on "urgent measures" regarding the migration issue. "The federal government needs a masterplan to effectively implement the necessary course change in its asylum policy," he told the German Press Agency. This includes stricter border controls with significant returns, "even for persons who want to enter from a secure third country with asylum applications," as well as immediate deportations of repeat and violent offenders to Syria, Afghanistan, and Maghreb countries.

Schuster's Five-Point Demand Catalogue also includes immediate arrest for extraditable foreign serious criminals and dangerous offenders until they voluntarily leave. In addition, federal departure centers should be established, family reunification for subsidiary protection beneficiaries should be stopped, and the voluntary resettlement program for Afghanistan in 2022 should be halted.

"The goal is a short-term drastic reduction in access, while consistently increasing the departure of particularly problematic individuals subject to expulsion," Schuster said. I consider diplomatic negotiations with Afghanistan and Syria regarding this to be possible and appropriate given the security situation.
