Saudia, the Arabian airline, will buy up to 100 'Lilium Jets'}
Lilium, the developer of the flying taxi, has received its largest order yet: The state-owned Saudi Arabian airline Saudia intends to purchase up to 100 of Lilium's electric "Lilium Jets," as Lilium announced on Thursday. The contracts for 50 firm orders and an option for an additional 50 aircraft were signed during a visit to Lilium's headquarters in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich.
According to Saudia, the flying taxis will reportedly be used for the transportation of pilgrims between Mecca and Jeddah, as well as for transporting guests to sports megas events in the capital Riyadh and to tourist attractions. The first machine is expected to be delivered in 2026.
Saudia would thus become one of the first customers for the flying devices. Lilium had announced on Wednesday that the manned first flight of its vertical take-off and landing aircraft would be delayed from the end of this year to the beginning of 2025, but still plans to deliver the first machines to customers in 2026. Saudia had already signed an intent to purchase 100 Lilium Jets 1.5 years ago. Lilium stated that it has received 780 firm orders and intentions to purchase for the electric flying taxis to date. The young company needs customer deposits to finish developing its flying taxi.
