Sanders supports "stiff-running" Biden
Who can beat Donald Trump best and can it really be Joe Biden as the incumbent US-President? Among US-Democrats, this question seems to be swirling around these days. Now, prominent politician Bernie Sanders is entering the fray, three and a half months before the election.
Influential US Politician Bernie Sanders has positioned himself against Joe Biden in light of discussions about Biden's age and has offered him support. "Yes, I know Biden is old, prone to stumbles, runs stiff, and had a disastrous debate against Trump," writes the long-serving US Senator in a guest article in the "New York Times." But an election is not an entertainment show.
"I will do everything I can to ensure President Biden is re-elected," Sanders, who is known in the US as a party-less left-wing politician, ran against Hillary Clinton in the US Democrat primaries in 2016 and 2020 but was never the presidential nominee against the Republicans, explained.
What about Clinton/Harris?
His support for Biden was explained further: He is the most effective president in modern US history and the strongest candidate to defeat "a demagogue and pathological liar" - Trump. Biden, on the other hand, speaks of economic success, important infrastructure investments, and reforms for student loans that have helped millions of American citizens.
Recently, a discussion has heated up among US Democrats about whether a campaign with Biden against the Republican challenger Trump still makes sense - or if other candidates or candidates might have better chances.
A recent survey has brought an old acquaintance of Sanders back into focus: US Politician Hillary Clinton, a strong supporter of Biden, who is barely mentioned on the list. Politico reported based on the survey that the US Democrats have the best chances against Trump if Clinton is the presidential candidate with Kamala Harris as the campaign partner and potential Vice President - an office Harris currently holds under Biden. However, this possible option is hardly being discussed publicly among US Democrats.
In the guest article, Sanders also addressed aspects of Biden's politics that do not appeal to him, such as "US support for Israel's terrible war against the Palestinians" and Biden's approach to making US citizens' access to the US healthcare system easier. While Biden's ideas here are closer to Sanders', Sanders envisions a much more state-run and less private healthcare system with "healthcare as a human right."
Despite the ongoing discussions about alternative candidates, Bernie Sanders has publicly expressed his support for Joe Biden's re-election campaign, stating that Biden is the most effective president in recent history and the strongest candidate against Donald Trump. However, a recent survey suggests that US Politician Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris could pose the best chance for the Democrats against Trump, according to reports by Politico.
