Samsung reveals plan for accelerated AI chip deliveries.

Samsung's memory chip, foundry, and packaging teams now work together seamlessly as clients communicate through a single channel, significantly reducing the production time for AI chips by about 20%. This was revealed by Samsung on Wednesday.

Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of the Foundry Business, spoke during a Samsung event in San Jose, California: "We are residing in the era of AI, the appearance of generative AI is absolutely transforming the technology sector." Samsung forecasts the global chip market revenue to hit $778 billion by 2028, driven by the demand for AI chips.

At a press meeting before the event, Marco Chisari, Executive Vice President of Foundry Sales and Marketing, asserted that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's projected surge in AI chip demand seems plausible. According to previous reports, Altman asked TSMC executives to construct approximately three dozen new chip factories.

Samsung is one of the rare companies that sell memory chips, provide foundry services, and create chips within the same infrastructure. In the past, this setup sometimes disadvantaged Samsung, as potential clients were wary that engaging its foundry might aid Samsung in other market areas which they were competing against.

However, with the rising need for AI chips that require close integration of all chip components to swiftly process massive amounts of data fast and efficiently, this diverse approach could prove advantageous for Samsung in the future.

Additionally, the South Korean tech giant highlighted its advanced chip architecture, known as gate all-around (GAA), a transistor architecture that enhances chip performance and reduces power consumption. This technology is considered vital for continued improvement of AI chips as they get finer, approaching the physical limits of what is possible.

While TSMC, the world's largest foundry, is also pursuing chips with GAA, Samsung initiated its use earlier and aims to mass-produce its second-generation 3-nanometer chips with GAA during the second half of 2022.

Furthermore, Samsung introduced its newest 2-nanometer chip-making process for high-performance computing chips. These chips will have power rails on the underside of the wafer to enhance power delivery. Mass production is planned for 2027.

Samsung's strategic move to strengthen its foundry business in the realm of AI chips is expected to create new opportunities in the tech business sector. The company's focus on advanced technologies like gate all-around (GAA) and its plan to mass-produce 3-nanometer chips with GAA could potentially attract more tech businesses looking for efficient AI solutions.
