"Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" forms a group in the Bundestag
Following the dissolution of the Left Party, ten MPs led by politician Sahra Wagenknecht formed a new group in the Bundestag on Tuesday. According to Wagenknecht, she was elected chairperson, her colleague Klaus Ernst as deputy chairperson. At the same time, the new group submitted an application for recognition to the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas. They are hoping for a decision in January, said Wagenknecht.
If the plenary of the Bundestag agrees, the parliamentarians will receive certain rights and financial support as a new group. The details will first be discussed in the Council of Elders and then set out in a resolution. The remaining 28 Left Party MPs had already applied for the status of a separate group. The Bundestag has not yet given any information on when the two motions could be voted on.
Wagenknecht and nine other MPs left the Left Party in October. They want to found their own party in January as a rival project - the actual founding is expected to take place on January 8, Wagenknecht said. The founding party conference has been announced for January 27.
Without the former members, the Left Party fell short of the minimum size of 37 MPs and therefore disbanded last week. For the time being, all 38 former members are listed as "non-attached" in the Bundestag and only have limited rights as individual MPs.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance's application for recognition as a group in the Bundestag is currently pending with the President, Bärbel Bas. Should the application be approved, the new group will receive certain rights and financial support, as stipulated in a future resolution. The remaining 28 Left Party MPs have also applied for separate group status, although a decision on the motions has not been announced yet.
