- Sabotage against the German army?
Investigators are looking into unusual activities at a waterworks on the Cologne-Wahn airbase, suspecting a crime against the German Armed Forces. The barracks have been cordoned off, as reported to the German Press Agency on Wednesday.
The "Spiegel" first reported the closure of the barracks. Police, military police, and the Military Security Service of the German Armed Forces are investigating the suspicion of a sabotage action; it is possible that someone broke into the barracks.
A hole in a fence was also discovered following indications of a disruption. This raised the initially unconfirmed suspicion that the water supply might have been sabotaged. Water samples were taken for investigation. According to the "Spiegel", internal messages urged soldiers and civilian staff not to drink any tap water. The barracks were not to be entered or exited.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Defense declined to comment on a possible "violation of human rights". The Territorial Command stated: "We wish a speedy and full recovery to those German Armed Forces members who may have been harmed in connection with the incident." Close and trusting cooperation is being maintained with the investigative authorities to clarify the matter.
The police have cordoned off the barracks extensively. Several departments are housed there. The Air Transport Wing of the German Armed Forces, responsible for travel by cabinet members and high-ranking government officials, is also based there.
The investigation into the suspicious activities at the waterworks is taking place in Cologne-Wahn, specifically at the waterworks on the Cologne-Wahn airbase. The Air Transport Wing of the German Armed Forces, located within the cordoned-off barracks, has been affected by the incident.
