Art - Saarland Museum shows paper art by Oskar Holweck
Sculptures made of Paper, Book Objects, Relief Cuts, and expressive Charcoal Drawings: The Artist Oskar Holweck (1924-2007) primarily worked with the material Paper. In celebration of his 100th birthday, the Modern Gallery of the Saarlandmuseum in Saarbrücken will exhibit the retrospective "Oskar Holweck - Form and Texture" from October 12, 2024 to January 5, 2025. The native Saarlander was one of the most important representatives of Concrete Art after 1945.
The exhibition, according to the museum, will feature approximately 70 works from the years 1956 to 1996, which come from the collection of the Saarlandmuseum, the Oskar-Holweck Estate, as well as public and private collections in Germany. They illustrate the variety of artistic possibilities that Holweck developed with Paper.
Although the artist seldom left his hometown, Saarland, he was represented nationally and internationally in over 400 exhibitions, the museum stated. Holweck would have turned 100 years old on November 19, 2024.
Holweck developed a wealth of artistic methods to work with Paper: by tearing, pressing, and folding, he created serial structures. In addition, there were sheets with charcoal points that ran horizontally, as well as Paper Objects as sculptures.
The Modern Gallery of Saarlandmuseum in Saarbrücken, the artist's hometown, will showcase a diverse range of Oskar Holweck's artworks made primarily from Paper in the upcoming exhibition. As a Saarland native and a significant figure in Concrete Art post-1945, Holweck's contributions to the art world are celebrated with this retrospective. The exhibition will feature numerous works from various collections, highlighting the artist's innovative techniques and love for Paper as a material.
