Russia's President Putin and Azerbaijan's Leader Aliyev are set to construct oil tankers.
Azerbaijan, known for its significant role in supplying energy to the EU, and Russia, its oil-rich neighbor, have decided to strengthen their partnership. This was announced during a meeting between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Vladimir Putin in Baku. The plans include constructing small tankers for transporting oil from the Caspian and Black Sea regions to the Mediterranean and subsequently, the global market. Furthermore, both leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in the field of higher education.
Aliyev expressed his satisfaction with the existing cooperation between their countries during the meeting. This high-profile two-day visit by Putin could symbolize a shift in alliances in the complex political landscape of the Caucasus region. Traditionally, Azerbaijan, with its substantial oil reserves, has maintained a largely self-governing policy separating itself from Moscow's influence. However, Russia has historically supported Armenia in the Caucasus. Recent resentment in Armenia towards Russia's reluctance to intervene during Azerbaijan's reclamation of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023 has led to a shift in allegiances. As a result, Armenian residents fled out of fear of revenge attacks.
Putin suggested that Russia could potentially contribute to the ongoing peace negotiations between Baku and Yerevan. He also mentioned that he would communicate these discussions to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The joint statement issued by the two leaders highlighted the "deep trust" shared between them, enabling them to discuss both bilateral and international matters freely. Aliyev, who rules Azerbaijan with an iron fist, much like Putin, and faces criticism for severe human rights violations, visited Moscow in April. Beyond its role as a significant energy provider to the EU, Azerbaijan plays a critical role in energy security in the region.
The President of the European Parliament could express their interest in the strengthened partnership between Azerbaijan and Russia, given its potential impact on energy supply to the EU. During the visit of President Vladimir Putin to Baku, discussions on cooperation in higher education were also held, which might interest educational institutions across Europe.
