Russia's president, Putin, allegedly escalates tensions by proposing arms delivery to North Korea.
Vladimir Putin, Russia's President, strengthens ties with North Korea and doesn't shy away from sending weapons their way. This sets off panic in the US. The State Department worries about a potential destabilization of the Korean Peninsula.
The American administration views Putin's warning as a serious threat, particularly in light of Russia potentially supplying weapons to North Korea as retaliation for arming Ukraine. According to the State Department's spokesperson, Matthew Miller, such a move would undoubtedly destabilize the Korean Peninsula. It could also potentially violate UN Resolutions that Russia itself approved. The USA remains proactive in collaborating with South Korea, Japan, and other allies to counter North Korea's threats.
Earlier, the South Korean government had criticized a new pact between Moscow and Pyongyang on a strategic partnership as breaching UN sanctions and hinted at revisiting its stance on supplying weapons to Kiev. In response to a reporter's question about whether this could trigger chaos in the Indo-Pacific region, Miller, the US Ministry spokesperson, stated: "We're all for supporting Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression. However, it's ultimately South Korea's decision."
Putin, who met with Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang this week before heading to Vietnam, warned of severe consequences if Russia does start supplying precision weapons to North Korea. Putin suggested that such actions would not be welcomed by the current South Korean leadership.
Retaliatory Measures for Weapons Deliveries to Kiev
Posing a response to the West arming Ukraine, Putin threatened to arm North Korea with precision weapons. The West seems to overlook the fact that they're at odds with Russia due to its weapons deliveries. Putin claims that Kiev isn't controlling the use of the weapons they receive from Russia. In return, Russia could also export its military equipment to other worldwide regions without regard for how they're utilized, Putin stated.
North Korea, under the rule of Chairman Kim Jong Un, faces extensive UN sanctions and trade restrictions, including those relevant to the arms trade or technology transfers to the country. During his state visit to Pyongyang, Putin signed a new partnership agreement with Kim on Wednesday that also involves mutual assistance in the event of a war.
