Russian troops make territorial gains near Avdiivka
In the fighting in eastern Ukraine, Russian troops have made territorial gains near the industrial city of Avdiivka. According to Ukrainian military observers, Ukrainian units have had to partially withdraw from the industrial area south-east of the city.
Russian sources had already reported this last weekend. Official confirmations were not initially available. The front line between government troops and Moscow-backed separatists had been running in the industrial area since 2014.
Smaller territorial gains had also been made by Russian troops north-west of Avdiivka near the village of Stepove. The Ukrainian units are still threatened with encirclement. The garrison of the heavily destroyed town can only be supplied with supplies via a narrow corridor of less than seven kilometers. Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over 21 months.
The ongoing conflicts in eastern Ukraine have seen war escalate, with Russian military making significant territory gains near Avdiivka. These advances by Russian forces have forced Ukrainian units to retreat from certain areas, including the industrial region south-east of the city.
