Russian SU-24 jet violates Swedish air borders.

Unidentified Russian warplanes frequently breach the skies over the Baltic Sea, prompting NATO to scramble their fighters in response. Recently, a SU-24 Bomber ventured into Swedish airspace, leading to a diplomatic incident.

Swedish authorities claim that a Russian military aircraft violated their airspace on June 14, prompting them to call in the Russian ambassador. According to communications from the Swedish Foreign Ministry, the incursion occurred over the Baltic Sea island of Gotland, approximately 350 kilometers from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

The Swedish Air Force issued a warning to the Russian aircraft prior to its flight, as reported by the Swedish Army. However, the aircraft refused to alter its course, resulting in its expulsion from Swedish airspace by a pair of JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets. Up to this point, Russia has remained silent on the allegations.

Gotland holds strategic significance for Sweden, acting as a key stronghold for controlling the seas and airspace in the Baltic Sea. Sweden became a NATO member roughly three months ago, a decision prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and their relinquishment of their neutrality.

Finland followed suit in 2023, joining NATO after reporting a potential Russian military aircraft in its airspace in the Finnish Gulf a week prior.

Fly-bys from unmarked Russian aircraft are common in the Baltic Sea. Last week, Lithuanian reports indicate that NATO fighters were dispatched on multiple occasions to identify unidentified Russian military planes in international airspace above the Baltic Sea. In total, eleven air defense alerts were issued, as reported by the Defense Ministry in Vilnius.

In response to the incident, Sweden strengthened its air defense capabilities in the Baltic Sea, deploying additional fighter aircraft to monitor Russian activities. Furthermore, Sweden and Finland, both recently joined NATO, are collaborating to enhance their joint surveillance of the Baltic Sea, using the shared border between the two countries as a strategic advantage.
