Russian satellite disintegrated and hurled into space
A Russian satellite fell apart during the night on Thursday and released over a hundred debris pieces into space. The astronauts on the International Space Station ISS took refuge for an hour as a precaution, NASA announced on Thursday.
The incident occurred in an orbit near the ISS. The cause of the destruction of the Russian Earth observation satellite Resurs-P1 remained unclear at first. The spacecraft was launched in 2022.
According to LeoLabs, US radar systems detected in the night on Thursday how the satellite released a debris cloud in a low Earth orbit. The US Space Command of the Defense Department reported that the spacecraft produced over a hundred trackable debris pieces. However, no immediate threats were detected.
The Russian Earth observation satellite Resurs-P1, which was launched in 2022, was the one that disintegrated during the night on Thursday. Despite the incident happening in an orbit near the International Space Station ISS, all astronauts on board safely remained unaffected. Furthermore, similar satellite incidents were monitored by satellite tracking companies, such as LeoLabs, on Thursday night.
