Russian Man Faces Three Years in Prison for Making Offensive Comment about Boy Wearing "Z" Hat
In Russia, a man named Alexander Neustroev has been condemned to spend three years in a penal colony for insulting a young lad who was wearing a hat with a "Z" sign on it. This judgment was made by a court in the Siberian city of Yekaterinburg on a recent Tuesday. Neustroev was charged with hooliganism and threatening violence.
The case goes back to videos from a surveillance camera originating from last year, which were shared by the media. In the footage, an 11-year-old boy can be seen wearing a hat with the letter "Z" emblazoned on it. The symbol represents support for the operation in Ukraine, and Neustroev is heard saying vulgarities to the kid, mentioning his anus.
It was reported that the boy's mother brought him home, obviously distressed, as he had donned the emblem to symbolize his pride in his dad, who was fighting in Ukraine. In the initial trial, Neustroev was given a fine of around 70 euros. However, this sentencing prompted objections from politicians and a complaint from the prosecutor's office, which claimed the original sentence was too lenient. Hence, a fresh trial took place, resulting in Neustroev's three-year sentence.
The Russian authorities have been ruthless in their persecution of individuals who criticize their actions in Ukraine, often imposing lengthy prison terms.
