Russian leader Putin alleges Ukraine's involvement in an attempted assault on the Kursk nuclear power facility.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has made allegations against Ukraine for attempting to assault the nuclear power plant in Kursk. During a live cabinet meeting on Thursday, he declared, "The adversary attempted to attack the nuclear facility last night," without presenting any concrete proof. He further mentioned that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had been informed of the situation.
This nuclear power plant is situated approximately 100 kilometers from the border, in the Russian region of Kursk. Unforeseen Ukrainian forces advanced into this region on August 6, and now assert control over nearly a hundred settlements and over a thousand square kilometers of land.
Following the initiation of Ukraine's counteroffensive, the IAEA expressed concerns regarding the influence of combat on the Kursk NPP and urged "all parties to show utmost restraint." Prior to Putin's accusations against Ukraine, the IAEA disclosed that their leader, Rafael Grossi, would be visiting the Kursk NPP the following week.
Since the commencement of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the IAEA has repeatedly warned of the possibility of a nuclear disaster as a result of combat, especially around the Russian-occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant located in Zaporizhzhia. The Vienna-based agency recently characterized the situation there as "deteriorating," following a drone attack.
Russia took control of the Zaporizhzhia NPP in March 2022 as part of its invasion of Ukraine. Due to the fighting, several incidents have occurred at this site, with both Kyiv and Moscow pointing fingers at each other.
The nuclear power plant in question is the Kursk, located 100 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. After Ukraine's forces advanced into the region on August 6, they now control numerous settlements and a vast area near the Kursk NPP.
