Russia warns Armenia of destabilization
Russia's Former Ally Armenia Deceives with NATO and the EU. A Military Alliance Led by Moscow Wants to Leave the Former Soviet Republic.
Russia has criticized the participation of its former ally Armenia in the NATO summit in Washington. Armenia is taking the risk of destabilizing the South Caucasus region through cooperation with NATO, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Moreover, Armenia is undermining its own security in doing so.
Armenia is seeking a solution out of Russia's sphere of influence and plans to leave the military alliance, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which is led by Russia. The background is that Armenia, like Azerbaijan - both former Soviet republics - has been disappointed with Russia in a territorial dispute.
The Armenian government is now aiming for closer relations with the USA and the European Union. In this context, it also plans a joint military exercise with the USA in July. Armenia has also repeatedly stated that it will not support Russia in the war against Ukraine and has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
In response to Armenia's participation in NATO summits, Moscow expressed concerns, fearing that its former ally's actions could precipitate instability in the South Caucasus region. Despite criticisms from Russia, Armenia persists in its attempts to forge closer ties with NATO and the EU, potentially shifting its military allegiances away from the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
