Russia uses Trump assassination attempt for Own Purposes
In response to the attack on ex-President Trump, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry draws a parallel to attempted attacks on Putin. The Republicans are called upon by her not to approve any more Ukraine aid.
Just hours after the attempted assassination of the former US President Donald Trump, Russia used the incident for its own purposes. The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on the US government to "review their policy of inciting hatred."
This policy targets "political opponents, countries, and peoples," said Zakharova, trying to equate the attack on Trump with the support the Ukraine receives from the USA. She also accused the Ukraine of supporting attempts on the life of the Russian President.
In fact, the Ukrainian military intelligence service had just reported that there had been several unsuccessful assassination attempts against Putin. However, the comparison is flawed: Russia is waging war on Ukraine. The attack on Trump, as far as is known so far, was allegedly carried out by a 20-year-old lone attacker. US President Joe Biden and numerous high-ranking Democrats in the USA have sharply condemned the attack.
The well-known spokeswoman directly addressed "those in the US who give their voice for the weapons delivery to Zelensky" - in other words, primarily Republican politicians in the US Congress. Zakharova said that the money for Ukraine should "perhaps be used better for the financing of the police and other services that ensure law and order in the US." No words of condolence or wishes for recovery for Trump were heard from the official Russian side at first.
That Zakharova barely conceals her appeal to the Republicans has a reason: Their blockade of aid for Ukraine in the House of Representatives had given Russia a massive advantage in the war against Ukraine in the spring. Trump had organized this blockade to put political pressure on Biden. The release of funds in April brought no turnaround, but a noticeable relief for Ukraine at the front.
- Despite the attempted assassination of former President Trump, which Russia used as an opportunity to critique US policies, Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman, accused the Ukrainian military intelligence service of several unsuccessful assassination attempts against Vladimir Putin.
- In response to the attack on Donald Trump, Zakharova urged the US government to reconsider its policy of inciting hatred, which she linked to support for Ukraine, a country she accused of attempting Putin's life.
- Amidst this political tension, Trump played a significant role in the House of Representatives by organizing a blockade of aid for Ukraine, aiming to put pressure on President Joe Biden's administration.
