Under the cover of night, Russian forces launched an assault on Sumy's region in eastern Ukraine, utilizing numerous drones and rockets. The city of Konotop reportedly suffered the brunt of this attack, leaving at least 14 civilians injured, as per local authorities. The incident caused substantial damage to local infrastructure, including residential buildings, schools, and businesses.
The attack on this city, home to around 90,000 people prior to the invasion, led to electricity and water disruptions. Efforts were made by repair crews to reconnect crucial facilities such as hospitals and water treatment plants to the power grid. However, it remains unclear when the affected residences will be restored.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian army utilized 5 rockets and 64 Iranian-origin combat drones in their assault. Among these, 44 drones were successfully intercepted. The scale of the attack can be inferred from military reports, although their veracity cannot be confirmed in detail. As a precaution, air defenses were activated around the capital, Kyiv, to neutralize incoming drones.
Following the attack, the European Union expressed concern over the escalating conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire. The European Union also pledged support to Ukraine in restoring its infrastructure and helping affected civilians.
