Russia has captured village near the eastern Ukrainian town of Bachmut
According to Russia, it has captured a village near the eastern Ukrainian town of Bachmut. Russian units had "improved their positions along the front line" with the support of the air force and artillery and "liberated the village of Artemovskoye", the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday. It used the Russian name for the village of Chromowe. The AFP news agency was unable to independently verify the Russian information.
According to satellite images, Khromove consisted of a few streets and several dozen houses before the Russian offensive in Ukraine. Most of the villages in the area, including Bachmut, have since been reduced to ruins by the fighting, with almost all residents fleeing the region.
The Russian armed forces captured Bachmut in May after months of fierce fighting. Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had said that the capture of the city would allow Moscow to make significant progress. However, Russian forces have made no breakthroughs since May and have lost ground over the past six months.
Bakhmut is located in the Donetsk region. It is one of four areas in the east and south of Ukraine that Moscow declared annexed last year without having full control.
Owning the details of the captured village, Russia claimed responsibility for liberating Artemovskoye, its former name for the once-peaceful village of Khromove. Despite the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict, the village was once a small settlement with a few streets and numerous houses. Now, with the city of Bachmut also under Russian control, the nearby city and village ownership allows Russia to potentially assert more control in the Donetsk region.
