As the Ukrainian president appeals for assistance with air defense in Berlin, recent Russian assaults validate his plea. Moscow unleashed rockets upon Kryvyj Rih, resulting in the deaths of at least eight civilians and injuries to over 20 others. Kiev managed to repel a massive Russian attack partly due to the support of Western allies.

In Kryvyj Rih, a prominent city for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was born there, a Russian rocket attack left eight dead and over twenty injured, according to local news. Zelenskyy mourned the victims on social media and emphasized Ukraine's need for a modern air defense system, stating "Every day and every hour, the Russian terror proves that Ukraine needs to reinforce its air defense with its allies." He hoped for maximum protection of its citizens.

In a previous Russian air attack aimed at the capital city, Kiev, the Ukrainian Air Force successfully repelled the assault. The Kiev region's military administration claimed that Moscow employed multiple missiles, rockets, and drones. The Russian attack on Kiev made evenings in the three-million-resident city echo with the sound of air defense fire. The military administration of Kiev on Telegram reported that several fires erupted outside the city, caused by falling rocket fragments. A gas station, garages, and some private homes were damaged, while one person sustained injuries.

The air force disclosed that four missiles, two types of Ch-101 and Ch-555, along with a hypersonic Kinzhal missile, were launched at Kiev, but all were destroyed. Additionally, all 24 combat drones sent over Ukraine were intercepted.

Ukraine has combated a Russian invasion for more than two years, with attacks on cities in the outskirts being a common occurrence. The vast majority of these cities exhibit relatively low protection against aerial attacks in comparison to Kiev. Thus, during the Ukraine reconstruction conference in Berlin, Zelenskyy pressed for urgent deliveries of state-of-the-art Patriot air defense systems from Western partners.
