Rudy Giuliani's legal license was revoked in DC due to the aftermath of his false claims involving the 2020 election.
Giuliani lost his license to practice law in New York this summer due to those proceedings, and since the District of Columbia (DC) Bar and the New York Bar have a reciprocal relationship, he's now undergoing disbarment in the district as well. According to the new ruling from the DC Court of Appeals, Giuliani failed to challenge his disbarment in Washington.
Multiple ex-attorneys of Trump have encountered professional disciplinary proceedings for supporting his election overturn strategies, but most of these cases against other Trump lawyers are still ongoing.
Besides the New York proceedings, Giuliani is facing separate DC Bar disciplinary proceedings focusing on a 2020 election lawsuit he was involved in, aiming to invalidate thousands of votes in Pennsylvania. This case hasn't reached its conclusion yet.
Giuliani has faced severe consequences for his role in the election reversal schemes. Authorities in Georgia and Arizona brought criminal charges against him related to the election manipulations (Giuliani has pleaded not guilty in both instances). Plus, two Georgia election workers obtained a $148 million defamation judgment against him for spreading false claims about them after the 2020 election.
The New York disciplinary attorney ethics proceedings against Giuliani mostly took place privately. The New York Supreme Court, in its disbarment order, stated that Giuliani not only knowingly violated fundamental legal profession principles but also contributed to the nationwide unrest following the 2020 Presidential election, with no remorse.
In a statement on Thursday, Giuliani's spokesperson, Ted Goodman, argued that "legal community members aiming to safeguard justice system integrity should immediately criticize this partisan, politically-motivated decision."
Goodman added that "those targeting Mayor Giuliani can’t undermine the truth that he remains the most accomplished prosecutor in U.S. history, who contributed significantly to enhancing others' lives more than most other living Americans today."
Despite Goodman's objections, thepolitics surrounding Giuliani's legal troubles continue to escalate, with ongoing disciplinary proceedings in DC focusing on his involvement in a 2020 election lawsuit. Regardless of thesepolitical debates, the outcome of these legal proceedings will significantly impact Giuliani's career in law.
