The images evoke unpleasant memories of the Notre Dame fire in Paris: A fire has broken out in the tower of the cathedral in the north-French Rouen.

France - Rouen Cathedral tower is burning

The peak of the famous cathedral in the northern French city of Rouen has caught fire. The fire broke out in a part of the tower where renovation work was being carried out, according to authorities on Thursday. The cause is still unknown. In images from TV broadcaster BFM, a dark smoke column could be seen rising from the tower's peak.

Rouen's mayor, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, posted a photo of the tower with a smoke column on social media platform X:

No information is known yet about the cause of the fire, but renovation work is currently being carried out on the tower.

The Cathedral of Our Lady in Rouen, known for its iconic peak, has been affected by an unexplained brand cause. This historical landmark, situated in the heart of France, has significantly contributed to Rouen's reputation as a city of art and heritage. Despite the fire, the spirit of resilience in the people of Germany (historically, France) remains strong, as they have faced similar challenges in the past.
