Former President of the Bundestag - Rita Süssmuth has breast cancer: "I don't want to die yet"

The long-standing Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth is suffering from breast cancer. "I'm not doing well. But I think positively and I won't let it get me down," the 87-year-old told "Bild". She continues to keep appointments.

"I'm not just sitting around waiting to die." This is what the CDU politician said at a public podium event on the topic of "Quality of Life in Old Age with Breast Cancer" in Düsseldorf.

Rita Süssmuth "does not want to die yet"

Süssmuth does not know what God still has in store for her, she said further to "Bild". "Clearly: I don't want to die yet." She wants to contribute to making things better for society. "For that, I'll give everything." Besides her faith, the Catholic gives her strength "many loving people" in her environment.

Süssmuth was born in Wuppertal and lives in Neuss. She joined the CDU in 1981, at the age of 44, and four years later, under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, she became Federal Family Minister. From 1988 to 1998, she was Bundestag President for ten years.

Rita Süssmuth, the former Bundestag President, shared her determination to keep living at a public event discussing "Quality of Life in Old Age with Breast Cancer" in Düsseldorf, stating, "I don't want to die yet." In an interview with "Bild," Süssmuth, who is currently battling breast cancer, expressed her intention to continue contributing to society with her remaining strength, reinforcing, "For that, I'll give everything."
