Revamped Eateries Captivate with Elegance - Exquisite Dining Transformed within the Private Garden Plot
In the Allotment Gardens Hochburg of Berlin, newly-arrived tenants are breathe life into previously outdated clubhouses. Over the past few years, these makeovers have turned some establishments into Fine-Dining restaurants, a trend that has spread beyond the city limits.
Across Germany, including Hochburg Berlin and other locations, clubhouses are being renovated into genuine culinary or cultural hidden treasures, thanks to a new generation of tenants. These individuals are giving these Locales a makeover, stripping them of the 80s charm. For example, in Berlin, former head chef of the vegan Fine-Dining restaurant "Kopps," Marcus Kümmel, now prepares dishes in a courtyard colony on the city's outskirts.
He crafts meals from carrots, cabbages, herbs, and primarily plant-based ingredients. Kümmel opened his local, "Bollenpiepe," nearly a year ago, and survived the first winter. He expresses his happiness with his new lifestyle: "Here, birds chirp and leaves rustle in the trees. Here, people can simply unwind." Some of his ingredients are sourced directly from the gardens, making for the shortest supply routes possible.
Berlin houses approximately 66,000 gardens in the Allotment Gardens, according to the Federal Association of Allotment Gardens in Germany. Elsewhere, other Locales have also been revitalized by new tenants, who were previously threatened with decay. For instance, "Buddhas Garten" opened in Wedding last year, offering Asian cuisine. Stephan Trosiner at "Die Laube" in the Kleingartenanlage "Am Volkspark" in Prenzlauer Berg doesn't solely concentrate on food.
Nationwide, Allotment Locales undergo tenant changes
"The allotment movement has been in a state of flux for a long time. Allotment gardens are becoming increasingly accessible to the general public. It's only natural that the managed clubhouses are also evolving," says Gert Schoppa, President of the Berlin Association of Friends of Gardens.
Elsewhere, there are tenant changes that might prove beneficial to the Allotment gardens and their guests. For instance, "Felix am Hinzenberg" in Potsdam welcomed guests directly at the Havel since the summer of 2023 and offers Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. In Gießen, Nutritional Scientist Irina Rohe realized her dream with the vegan café "Wombats."
