War in Middle East - Reports: Hamas Military Chief Target of Israeli Attacks

An Israeli air strike on a humanitarian area in the southern GazStrip is reportedly targeted at Mohammed Deif, the leader of the military wing of Hamas, according to media reports. The army believes that the head of the so-called Qassam Brigades was among the casualties, Haaretz reported. However, there is no official confirmation of this yet.

According to Palestinian reports, at least 71 people were killed in the Israeli military operation. At least 289 more people were injured in the Al-Mawasi humanitarian area, the Hamas-controlled health authority announced. These reports could not be independently verified at first. The Israeli army stated that they would check corresponding reports upon request.

Israeli media report, citing the army, that it is unclear whether hostages were present in the area of the military operation. The Israeli army did not comment on the reports upon request.

Israel's Foreign Ministry stated that Defense Minister Joav Galant had recently conducted an assessment of the operational situation in Gaza with Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and the head of the domestic intelligence service Shin Bet, Ronen Bar.
