Report shows surge in anti-Semitic occurrences at record levels

Amidst the outbreak of the Gaza War, a notable surge in aggressive actions and prejudice towards Jews in Germany has been observed. Experts have reported a staggering 83% rise in incidents last year compared to 2022. The escalation of extreme violence also became evident post-October 7.

The Federal Association of Rias tallied 4,782 cases of antisemitic incidents last year, marking a 83% increase from 2022 and the highest recorded to date. This surge in attacks and hostilities against Jewish individuals in Germany commenced following Hamas' act of terror against Israel on October 7. Of these 4,782 instances, around 2,787 transpired from then until year-end, as per the Bundesverband's annual report.

Benjamin Steinitz, the Rias Managing Director, voiced concern over the erosion of fundamental rights for Jewish women and men. He stated, "Jewish women and men are subjected to harassment, threats, and attacks across all life aspects. Living an open, Jewish life has become even less viable since October 7 compared to before." The normalization of antisemitism must be countered.

The Federal Association of Research and Information Centers on Antisemitism operates a network of reporting stations in eleven federal states. Here, victims or witnesses can record such incidents, encompassing attacks and threats, but also insensitive remarks or animosity that may not always lead to criminal proceedings. Consequently, the numbers differ from official crime statistics.

By the end of the year, a rise in violent incidents emerged, as highlighted by Rias. Approximately two-thirds of all instances of extreme violence, attacks, and threats took place after October 7. Rias pointed out the attempted arson attack on a Berlin synagogue by two anonymous individuals in mid-October 2023 and two arson attacks on a Jewish family's house in the Ruhr area a few days later. Furthermore, there was an increase in destruction threats targeted at Jewish institutions and individuals.
