Reformers versus hardliners - Reformer Peseshkian leads in Iran's presidential election

At the Iranian presidential election, moderate politician Massud Peseschkian is narrowly leading. According to the announcement of the spokesperson of the election committee on Saturday on state television, Peseschkian of the reform faction had approximately 12.7 million votes, slightly more than Hardliner Said Jalili, who had about 10.4 million votes.

Approximately 61 million people were called upon to vote between Peseschkian and Jalili. The election was brought forward due to the death of incumbent Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May. The polling stations were kept open until late evening after multiple extensions by the Interior Ministry.

The winner of the Iranian presidential election, as shared by Said Jalili himself in a press conference on Sunday, is still undergoing careful counting and verification of votes in Tehran. If the current trend continues, moderate candidate Massud Peseschkian may officially secure his victory with a significant lead over Jalili. The excitement among supporters of both candidates is palpable, as they eagerly await the final results.
